Women are expected in heels or evening boots with heels; men in an elegant shirt, smart or dark denim trousers, and smart shoes or upscale trainers. Get those basics right and the door is a formality. Scotch is one of London's most historic clubs: a small, members'-club style room in Masons Yard, St James's, with an open-format music policy (hip-hop, house, RnB, pop and commercial). The room is intimate, so the door team can afford to be selective, and the crowd dresses up for it.

What Is Not Allowed for Anyone

Whatever your table or group, these are turned away at the Scotch door:

• Sportswear, tracksuits and gym wear
• Shorts and beachwear
• Caps and casual hats
• Sandals and flip-flops
• Fancy dress
• Hen party or birthday accessories such as sashes and tiaras

The no-hats rule is about casual caps and fashion hats, not religious or medical head coverings: turbans, hijabs, kippahs and headscarves worn for faith or health reasons are accommodated.

Heels are the one firm rule. Heels or evening boots with heels are expected, and flats are the most common reason a well-dressed woman is questioned at the door.

Beyond the shoes, aim for elegant and polished:

• A dress is the easiest choice and never wrong. Any tasteful cocktail or evening dress works.
• Jumpsuits and co-ords in a smart fabric are a good alternative.
• Dark, clean denim can pass when the rest of the outfit is clearly dressed up (heels, a smart top). Ripped or distressed denim does not.

Dresses are recommended rather than mandatory: the door is judging whether the whole look is elegant, not checking for a particular garment.

Scotch of St James Dress Code for Men

Men get the closest look at the door, so the safest route is the simplest one: a smart shirt, smart trousers and smart shoes. If you do not want to think about it, that combination is never refused for clothing.

If you want a little more flexibility:

• Dark denim is acceptable when it is clean, slim and worn with a smart shirt and smart shoes. Light, ripped or baggy jeans are refused.
• Upscale trainers can pass: clean, minimal, ideally black or plain leather. Chunky, running or visibly worn trainers do not.
• A blazer or jacket is not required, but it lifts a denim outfit and helps on a busy Saturday.

Is the Dress Code Different for Tables?

The code itself is the same, but groups with a table at Scotch sometimes get a little leniency at the door on quieter nights, for example a woman in smart flats within a well-dressed table group. That is at the door team's discretion and is never guaranteed, so dress to the full code and treat any flexibility as a bonus. Sportswear, tracksuits and shorts are refused whoever you are with.

Before You Go: Door Checklist

• Shoes first. Heels for women, smart shoes or clean upscale trainers for men. Shoes are the first thing the door looks at.
• Bring photo ID. Every venue licensed to sell alcohol must operate an age verification policy under the mandatory licensing conditions, so carry a passport, driving licence or PASS card even if you are well over 18.
